Lies, Damned Lies, and Paula Bennett

Well, I’m back from a long and lazy summer hiatus, and in light of the fact that it’s January, news is slow, and beneficiary victimisation has returned from its summer break well-fed and full of gusto, I had the idea that the good folks down at the Ministry of Social Development could really save themselves millions of dollars in drug testing to satisfy the ideological oddities of Paula Bennett if, for the bargain price of about $700, they sent their Minister on this course:

The good folks at the University of Auckland have helpfully devised an approach that could save the state millions of dollars a year in pointless drug testing. Cheers guys.

If you want to spout stupid and unhelpful shit, then you should really expect some stupid responses, Paula. Last time I checked, the most basically statistically literate person on the street could tell you that such a correlation that Ms Bennett is suggesting isn’t even close to a causation effect. Next time, use some evidence to back up what you’re saying instead of victimising those who really just need a hand up. It’s really starting to get just a tad old.

Happy Tuesday, everyone.
